Rory McIlroy
Year in review - Rory McIlroy
The Ulsterman’s thrilling victory at the US Open was the highlight of the year. His blistering 268 at Congressional, the lowest ever US Open score, would have been impressive enough if it did not come at the age of 22. It would also have been stunning even without the backdrop of his final round Masters collapse. He has certainly made himself a staple in the Golf betting.
That fourth day 80 at Augusta, the worst ever final round score by a player leading after three rounds of the Masters, was truly the stuff of nightmares. McIlroy’s meltdown from holding a four-shot lead at the start of the day was complete, characterised by bizarre shot selection, hacked drives and a pair of three-putts from a few feet that belonged on a seaside crazy golf course.
To be able to clear his head and play such near flawless golf as he did at Bethesda was for many the hallmark of a true champion. He now seems to have the perfect temperament for golf rather than a suspect one that appeared to be a barrier to success.
McIlroy now has the task of handling the expectation of being a favourite for every tournament he lines up for. He battled hard to make the cut at the Open and PGA Championship in trying conditions, but much more is now expected. He is now always highly in demand in the Sports Betting
The early signs are that he can handle the media frenzy and demands of being the sport’s biggest draw. Top 10 finishes at the WGC Cadillac and Bridgestone events proved his hot form was sustained for much of the year – he did not finish outside the top 35 in European tour events.
