Scotland v Georgia
Author: Thomas Rooney 13/09/2011
2011 Rugby World Cup
Scotland will need to be on their guard on Wednesday because, despite narrowly defeating Romania in their opening fixture, they face a huge test against Georgia.
Although, when first looking at the fixture, Andy Robinson’s men look overwhelming favourites and should probably win the match, Georgia are ready to stamp their authority down on the World Cup and cause a major upset.
They are still hurting from four years ago when they came so close to seeing off Ireland and will be doing all they can to get a victory in their opening clash to give them at least some hope of reaching the next phase.
What makes the match against Scotland even more interesting is the coach of Georgia is Scottish. The script is written. A Scotsman leads Georgia to victory over his homeland.
It would be a major blow for Scotland, but for Georgia, it could be the major breakthrough they need to assert themselves on the international game.
The men in a Georgia 2011 Jersey are fired up for the game and will have seen Scotland’s opening win and be upbeat about their chances.
It’s always tricky to start against a minnow at a major competition but Scotland have their weaknesses and who better to do expose them than their former coach.
Richie Dixon, who led Scotland during the mid-1990’s, knows all about Georgia's opponents and that will be a real advantage as they plot their way to a memorable victory.
It’s a win-win situation for Dixon as if Georgia win, he is a tactical genius and if they lose, it’s not all doom and gloom because they are expected to. As long as they put up a fight.
They are sure to do so with the size of their players. They are warriors, big lads, who are set to fight hard against Robinson’s more elegant bunch. Not like other minnows, such as USA or Namibia, Georgia’s players have a whole host of experience from their domestic playing days.
Most of their players ply their trade in France and know how to match the very best players in the world which is a real advantage to Dixon’s side.
Although Scotland are favourites, Georgia will be doing all their can to finally cause a major upset and eradicate the hurt caused by Ireland four years ago.
