Steve McClaren
Forest part ways with Davies
Forest have moved quickly to secure the services of McClaren, originally an outsider for the role with football bets, on a three-year deal after Billy Davies was sacked on Sunday night. Davies, who has guided the club to the play-offs in the last two seasons, has paid the ultimate price for not sealing promotion to the Premier League.
Forest turned their attentions to McClaren quickly after Davies’ dismissal and his appointment was announced on Monday morning.
Chief Executive Mark Arthur was delighted with the appointment.
He told the club’s official website: "The club moved quickly to secure his services as it is rare for a manager and coach of his undoubted calibre to be available.”
The arrival of a new manager at the City Ground has been met with mixed views from the Forest faithful after the reputation McClaren has built up during his managerial career.
McClaren, famous for failing to guide England to Euro 2008 qualification following a defeat to Croatia at Wembley, has had a career blighted with highs and lows. His last job in English club football, however, was a success as he guided Middlesbrough into Europe and the UEFA Cup final as well as winning a League Cup during his time at the Riverside.
His successful time in the North East saw him appointed as the England national team manager but was sacked after the Euro 2008 qualifying failure which left him no other option but to move abroad and look for work.
That saw him arrive at FC Twente in Holland and McClaren started to restore his reputation by winning the Eredivisie in his first season before jumping ship to join German side Wolfsburg. His time in Germany was sour and his sacking saw him return to England to look for work.
After being the football betting, favourite to take up the vacancies at West Ham and Aston Villa, McClaren has surprisingly found work, this time outside the top-flight, which will provide a real challenge for him.
With Forest going so close in the last two campaigns, McClaren needs instant success at the City Ground to help the club back into the Premier League, restore his reputation in English football and win over the Forest fans.
