City to shade Stadium of Light visit

Sunderland v Man City Prediction:

Sunday 01st January 2012, Barclays Premier League: 15:00

Author: Thomas Rooney 29/12/2011

Sunderland host Manchester City this weekend hoping to continue the positive start they have made under new manager Martin O’Neill.

City will see this as an important fixture too of course – they will want to respond to the 0-0 draw at West Brom with three points – but for Sunderland, it is an excellent chance to end a difficult year on a high.

Focusing on the home side specifically to begin with, it is fair to say that the mood at the Stadium of Light has been lifted since the arrival of O’Neill. He is a widely respected manager and it has shown in Sunderland’s performances.

They may have lost to Tottenham recently, but this was only a narrow defeat and they have beaten Blackburn and Queens Park Rangers since the former Leicester City manager took the hot seat.

Last time out they were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Everton, but this was another crucial point that moves them four points clear of the relegation zone. They still have a lot of work to do of course, but they will be happy with the progress during December.

Whether this continues against Manchester City remains to be seen though. City are somewhat of a wounded animal after the 0-0 draw with West Brom and they will be focused on returning to winning ways.

If they are to begin 2012 on top of the Premier League, they need to win at the Stadium of Light. As things stand they are only above Manchester United on goal difference, so the pressure really is on Roberto Mancini’s men.

December has been a fairly average month by their high standards too. They have been knocked out of the Champions League, lost to Chelsea and most recently dropped points at West Brom. They will want to start January with a win and go on from here to make it a very productive month.

They have only scored five goals in their last four games though, so they will want to find their best form in front of goal once again. Having said that, three points is the main thing. They would take a scrappy 1-0 win in this one so they can push forward once again.

This is probably the way this one will go too. Sunderland are in excellent spirits at the moment and the home crowd will be in full voice, but it is City – motivated by their lack of a goal last time out – that will come away with the points.
