Peterborough v Sunderland Prediction:
Sunday, 8 January 2012 - The FA Cup Round 3 3:30pm
Author: Thomas Rooney 05/01/2012
Sunderland will look to continue their progress under new boss Martin O’Neill and safely secure their place in the next round of the FA Cup when the go up against Peterborough on Sunday.
The 3rd round of the oldest cup competition has always held a special place in the heart of football fans up and down the land thanks to the surprises it throws up, and this game could be another where the bigger side crashes out of the competition.
The Black Cats have charged their way up the Premier League in recent weeks under the tutelage of O’Neill who appears to have breathed a new lease of life into a side that looked to be struggling for survival under former boss Steve Bruce.
The Ulsterman has now guided them to four games unbeaten and has tasted defeat only once on his six games in charge so far – a 1-0 defeat against high-flying Tottenham.
That run of form has taken them up to tenth in the league and now they’ll be hoping to transfer that form into the cup competition and avoid the fate that befell them in the Carling Cup.
At the very depths of the Bruce era, Sunderland went tumbling out of the League Cup at the hands of a lower league outfit, Brighton, and the Posh will be hoping they have enough quality on display to cause an upset if Sunderland have an off day.
O’Neill’s side go into the game off the back of an emphatic 4-1 win against Wigan that propelled them into the top half of the table – a result in stark contrast to Peterborough’s resent efforts at least in terms of goals scored.
Darren Ferguson’s side have started to accumulate points after a slow start but will be worried about his side’s efforts in front of goal in recent weeks, with only five goals being scored in their last five games.
They do at least have two wins in their last four and looked set to make it three victories in four games before Marlon King’s late equaliser denied them all three points against Birmingham in their last outing.
Posh also have some injury worries that will certainly concern them, with captain Grant McCann’s long term absence with a knee problem proving to be a real loss for the home side on Sunday.
Sunderland meanwhile have an increasingly long injury list with no less than 11 players missing, with first team players Seb Larsson, Kieran Westwood, Wes Brown, Titus Bramble, Connor Wickham and Craig Gordon.
