Supporting Norwich City
By Joe Rooney
I've always been told that the Premier League is the biggest in the world, but you never really realise this until you travel around the world.
As a massive Norwich City fan I was anxious of the fact that I would not be able to keep up to date with how we were doing. All that changed when I unpacked my various iPod Casinos and checked into my first hotel in Bangkok.
As I'm sure many people do, one of the first things me and my friend Jack did was flick through the TV channels, where we found no fewer than seven channels showing nothing but Premier League football.
Whether it was live games, previews, analysis, specific club channels or goal highlights, it was all there!
That said, it was always a lot different watching football in Thailand. All you can find is Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea 'fans', with many Manchester City taking over soon I'm sure!
When I arrived in Australia I knew watching games would prove difficult as a 3pm kick-off in England was a 2am start in Sydney. Luckily we stumbled across a 24 hour bar that showed every game in the Premier League with televisions all over the place.
This is where the true football fans would be watching their teams, although Manchester United would always be on the big screens.
Apart from being at the ground itself, I couldn't imagine a better place to watch Norwich’s 2-1 win at QPR. 2am, eight Norwich fans sitting on a pool table watching on a fairly small screen. We couldn't have been any further from the game, but for those 90 minutes we were all there.
Its great how people can, all of a sudden, become great friends just from supporting the same football team. Myself and Jack met a guy staying in our hotel called Howard, who we both said at the time we were not too sure about.
We then found out he was a Norwich fan though, he was then one of us.
It’s a very strange thing supporting your team from thousands of miles away. I miss the buzz around the city after a win, even the excitement before and after games on Twitter and Facebook.
Saying that, after getting up at 5.30am to see us get played off the park by Tottenham, I thought the complete opposite, so happy to miss all of those things, and step outside to the sun rising over the harbour bridge.
That's the amazing thing about football, how it has such an effect on you, how those 90 minutes determines your mood for the whole day. You really do have to enjoy the highs while you can.
Norwich have proved this, only a few years ago we were a club sinking down the divisions and looking down and out. The darkest day being a fan for me is our famous 7-1 defeat at home to Colchester, where for one of the first times in my life, I left the game early.
Since that day though we have not looked back, and I cannot believe the improvement in the side.
Talk about a manager finding the right club. Paul Lambert has installed amazing belief in his players and a real desire to win not just for him, but for everyone involved in the club.
In my lifetime this really is the best period in the clubs history, and I'm just enjoying it while it lasts, as you know in football, anything can happen!
