Although Champion Trainer Paul Nicholls has yet to win the Grand National in what has been an illustrious career so far, he is not going to be short of challengers in 2012 and could find the winner in his smart chaser The Minack.
The eight-year old has won four out of his six chase appearances over fences, including victories in his last two starts.
The new campaign started this time around for The Minack at Wincanton where he won a Listed race over 3m1f. That win was then followed up with success a month later at Ascot in the GL Events Owen Brown Silver Cup Handicap Chase. Ruby Walsh was on board on that occasion as he scored having gone off 11/4 joint favourite.
The one big setback so far in the career of The Minack came in the 2011 Scottish Grand National at Ayr. Nicholls’ runner struggled to see out the 4m trip in Scotland, forcing Walsh to pull his mount up in what is the only time in the horse’s career that he has failed to come home. Anyone looking at the best ante-post Grand National betting odds cannot rule him out.
Walsh has won the big race on two different occasions. His maiden was broken in 2000 when he rode Papillon home to success for his father Ted. He then added his second victory on Hedgehunter in 2005, this time for Willie Mullins.
The Irish Champion Jockey may have a tough decision to make this year with so many to options in both the Mullins and Nicholls yard. Last season he opted for The Midnight Club who finished in sixth place but could have rode Niche Market who came home ahead of him under Harry Skelton.
