Martin Johnson has officially finalised the replacement of injured prop Andrew Sheridan with that of Leicester back-row forward Thomas Waldrom. The Kiwi-born 28-year-old has been among the England squad since last week, when he was called up initially for cover for Nick Easter, who had been suffering from a stiff back.
The options available to Johnson among the front-row have convinced him that there was no need to call for another prop and instead bolster the loose-forward department, that despite Matt Stevens picking up a slight ankle knock, in the comprehensive victory against Georgia last weekend. Waldrom will now finally be able to join in with the training sessions, after officially being named as a replacement for Sheridan, and Johnson will be able to consider the uncapped Leicester Tiger for selection against Scotland. Johnson maintained his confidence that Easter would be back fit soon but made it clear the decision to include Waldrom will add competition. The England manager also admitted he hadn't wanted to leave Leicester in the lurch with regards their Premiership campaign and plans for their squad over the next few weeks.
"Nick is making good progress as is Matt Stevens but with Thomas now out here it makes sense to get him into the squad officially so he can join in with training," he said.
"We also owe it to Leicester to make a decision so that they can plan accordingly without him."
Waldrom will now add a powerful and mobile option to the England pack should Johnson hand the number-eight his first cap. The former Hurricanes and Crusaders forward finished an impressive maiden season in England by winning the Premiership's Players' Player of the Season, producing consistently for Leicester and catching the England management's eye.
