Four-time Major Champion Phil Mickelson believes this will finally be the week he claims his first U.S. Open title after a series of near misses.
Mickelson has previously won the Masters on three separate occasions as well as the USPGA Championship but is still to claim his first U.S. Open after finishing second, five times. Those following the Open 2011 golf betting should keep an eye on how he gets on in the American equivalent to judge his form.
Mickelson has been involved in a number of famous final day duels at his national tournament and notoriously blew a one shot lead thanks to a wild drive and errant second shot on the final hole at Winged Foot to hand the title to Geoff Ogilvy in 2006. As anyone looking at the Open betting will know, an ability to handle pressure is crucial to win a major.
This year's event at Congressional will be 'Lefty's' 21st attempt at winning the tournament and despite his three Green Jackets and his Wanamaker Trophy, admits this is the title he wants the most in the whole of golf admitting "as a kid I dreamt of winning this tournament".
Congressional is a notoriously tough layout, with players relying on both long straight driving and incredible touch around the greens to even come within a whisker of success.
The San Diegan maintains that his 2006 collapse still haunts him and he knows he will have to be at the top of his game, especially in the short game department if he is to have any chance of succeeding.
"It's a challenge for me because it's difficult off the tee," he said.
"It's not as easy to get up and down around the greens".
"I don't talk as much during a US Open. It's just such a grind and you're so worried about what you're doing that it's very difficult to think about other stuff"
